Elden Ring Director Says He’s Still Working on His Ideal Fantasy RPG

With Elden Ring's DLC right on our heels, there's plenty of FromSoftware content for players to dive into over the next few months. But as always, the community at large is curious about the future of the franchise, and it appears that the Director of the franchise, Miyazaki himself, is already looking ahead as he mentions he's still working on his ideal fantasy RPG.

It has already been confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the only expansion for Elden Ring, and once it releases, players will have to bid farewell to the Lands Between, despite the absolute success the game has been throughout. But what comes next? Many are speculating. While many of us feel that Dark Souls has reached a satisfying conclusion, we wouldn't mind seeing a Sekiro 2 or Bloodborne 2 (and even a Bloodborne remaster or remake for all platforms would be welcomed).

When asked about the future of the franchise, lead director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared some insights in a recent interview with PC Gamer. Miyazaki mentioned that while Elden Ring was close to his vision of the ideal fantasy RPG, it wasn’t quite there yet. He explained, “Back when doing interviews about Elden Ring, I think I mentioned that I’m still in the process of making my ideal fantasy RPG. And while Elden Ring is not quite it, it’s pretty close. It’s getting close.

“It’s hard to say without giving spoilers for my next idea or our next games. But I think one thing that’s not necessarily missing but makes it difficult to achieve my ideal, is that when I play it, I know everything’s going to happen. I already know everything that’s going on. So in terms of enjoying the game from a player’s perspective, I’d love to not know that, and for somebody else to make my ideal fantasy game, please, if possible. Then I can enjoy it just as a player.”

Miyazaki’s comments strongly suggest that FromSoftware is working on new projects as Elden Ring winds down. While we can't say for sure what these projects are, there could be more than one title in development, as the studio has shown its capacity to handle multiple projects, like Armored Core and Elden Ring, simultaneously.
